I have chosen the question 'My Generation' to explore for my exam. I would like to investigate the characteristics of what makes my generation the way it is. I will consider daily activities that I, alongside those of my age group, do as part of normal day to day living. I have listed and examined the following themes; selfies, digital communication, dreams, labels, friendship groups, identity, family, social pressures and words.
I have explored the work of Petra Collins, Mariam Sitchinava and Rania Matar’s work. All three photographers have presented different and interesting ways of exploring themes that connect to my question.
As part of my investigations I have experimented using Petra Collins concept of ‘waiting for something’ and gathered that it isn’t such a significant subject to our Generation. I examined the techniques of Mariam Sitchinava, her effortless ability capture raw emotions made evident in the way that she photographs her subjects. Rania Matar’s work and the idea of using a bedroom as their sanctuary, a concept which has such relevance to today’s youth. I intend to adapt a similar concept to Matar’s work and technique to produce a final outcome, from experimentation and development.
