Experimentation: Nottingham City Centre

My experimentation work in Nottingham City centre was similar to my initial photographs in the idea that I categorised images into the sections e.g. selfies, dreams etc. Having them separated into the sections shows how 'My Generation' has evolved and what matter's the most. I wanted to try and showcase how these sections travel in local areas such as the town I live, Nottingham; and if it does really attract the generation of this day and age.

Dreams
With the youths of today, they are extremely showered with the media and magazines. This issue of Look isn't like the majority of others as it Lupita on the front cover. This girl never thought she'd be good enough for films and magazines because she wasn't 'light-skinned.' The idea that she is on a magazine is a major thing for her however, youths can see the airbrushing and how things have been perfected making us wonder 'are we not good enough?'

Quotes

This image is a good representation of how 'My Generation' reflect emotions. The jargon used on the cards is contextually how youths today speak to each other 'init' is unnecessarily added in sentences but is symbolic. The phrase hardly makes a lot of sense but still whoever was to receive the card would understand it; the target audience is specific. This is areas I want to tackle in my exam question. How this wouldn't be the norm on a birthday card and it would initially be just a 'Happy Birthday.'

Thoughts:

With this image I intended to use the work of Petra Collins' 'waiting for something.'  The idea that individuals usually do something to keep them selves busy whilst waiting for something. The cigarette end is the centre of the image catching my eye at first look. The smoke drifting out took me a while to notice and adjusting the brightness and contrast it became more visible. My eye starts from the fingers clenching the cigarette then follow the strong lines of the cigarette. This image has got some emotional effect to it, it shows an appreciation of previously overlooked aspects of daily life like how cigarette smoking is so injurious to the health. When I think about this image I imagine the youths of today following the footsteps of the older generation surrounding them and smoking. It capture a fleeting moment with the cigarette smoke blowing away. There is a shallow depth of field keeping the main focus on the cigarette and hand holding it. I used natural lighting which added an increasing effect to the image, giving it the sense of being outside and 'waiting for something.' I placed the hand straight in the image so the composition had straight sides but the cigarette leading up wards diagonally.

Growing up:
As a child of the 90's my mum would dress me up in jelly shoes. Maybe not as fashionable as they are now but nevertheless, they have been brought back in as statement items. The idea of creating something that I wore as child and is socially acceptable to be wearing them in this day and age. It shows a very clear understanding of how once is accepted in shops and big labels then 'teenagers' aren't afraid to try it out.
